Lab Head:

Dr. Devashish Sengupta

Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry

Assam University, Silchar-788011, Assam, India

Devashish Sengupta obtained his PhD degree from The University of Sydney, Australia. The chief area of research has been the synthetic and biomolecular aspects of functionalized porphyrins and fullerenes (both C60 and C70). Functionalizations leading to biologically active organic supramolecules like these can offer a wide scope of producing third generation photosensitizers that gains applications in the treatment of various cancers and other diseases. The first examples of successful biologically active, water-soluble flexible porphyrin-fullerene dyads with swing-type and parachute-type topologies have been researched at the University of Sydney, by Dr. Sengupta under the supervision of Prof. Peter A. Lay.

At present, distal pyridyls, meso-nitro, and new cationic meso-thiophenium porphyrins are being explored as possible anti-HIV agents. Fullerene dyads with porphyrins and quinazolines are also designed and synthesized to investigate their roles as cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT), and antimicrobial-PDT agents. Their significance under non PDT conditions are also explored as possible anti-HIV, and anti-microbial agents.
